About the music
Andrey Gugnin’s album of Grieg’s piano music including his Lyric pieces Books 3 and 7 were shortlisted at the 2025 Gramophone Awards. Grieg described Book 3 as ‘Spring songs’ and the set opens with a fluttering ‘Butterfly’—a wonderfully Mendelssohnian evocation and one of Grieg’s best-loved works. Book 7 follows the cheerful mood of Book 3. The final piece, ‘Homeward’, with its exuberant opening and serene second subject, one might describe as quintessential Grieg.

Released just a few months ago, Andrey’s most recent album featured transcriptions for piano of famous ballets by Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky. The Sleeping Beauty’s arranger, Mikhail Plentnev, created an attractive suite of piano pieces from a mixture of the most familiar numbers from the ballet, together with some hidden gems from the lesser-known ones. Three excerpts from the end of The Firebird create a thrilling finale.
